Reading: We started our folk literature unit. This includes but is not limited to: fables, myths, legends, tall tales, and fairy tales. We will start with a general overview of what folk literature is and then we will dive into each type of folk literature. To connect this at home, check out some folk literature from the library (TONS of options) and talk to your student about the elements that make it a piece of folk literature.
Writing: Students will start their rough draft of their summer stories this week. They choose a moment this summer to write about. Ask them about how the paper is coming along.
Social Studies: Last week, we focused on the branches of government. This week we are going to focus on the levels of government (local, state, national (federal)). We will focus on the governor and then on what makes up a county. Next week, we will dive into what makes a good citizen. To connect this at home: Talk to your student about the different responsibilities that the government has and how that plays a role in our everyday lives.
Math: Students are still working on using place value to solve addition and subtraction problems. We will soon move onto rounding. To help connect the addition and subtraction at home, have them write out some story problems and then solve them using their preferred method (Place Value Drawings, Show All Totals, or Number Lines). Ex. Susan went to the grocery store and she had a sweet tooth so she bought 476 caramel candies and 298 chocolate candies. How many candies did Susan buy in all?
